Take this (relaxed) time to review your lab values, s/s of common lab abnormalities
(e.g. hypo/hyper's)and, hey, why not work on your tan and squeeze in a long weekend in Florida before the insanity begins?!
LOL

why don't you get a copy of your syllabus for the class you are going into and read ahead so you're not overwhelmed the first day of school?

Definately get a head start on your reading

Corrine

Thu, 21 Feb 2008 06:51:12

You should read ahead with the syllabus. Nursing is like nothing else and failing is not an option because it takes a year to even have a second chance. Why have regrets make sure you do everything in your power to graduate on time and still keep a decent G.P.A.

Hey fourth semester SN's I am in the VA for 22 and I have McDo. Any Advice?

tehila

Thu, 21 Feb 2008 11:41:48

if you have prof mcdonough, you are in great hands, you can ask her all your questions in clinical. usully only the onco part is in the VA hopital and the neuro is in kings county. in either case take all your ID to the VA. if you are missing anything they won't let you in. look at the list you will get and make sure you have it all. parking there is great, either on the street or in the lot. at the county it's harder to park.

check with professor lavin, but i am pretty sure she is not teaching that class. in either case it is a very helpful class and will complement your nursing studies.

I'm in nur 22 with Prof. Mcdo, wondering how she is with lecture notes for the test , my first impression was not good. could it have been just a BAD day for her ? or this this how lecture is with her ?

tehila

listen to everything she tells you that's not on the handouts, listen to the lectures again, and read the book, especially whatever she stresses.

tehila

Mon, 03 Mar 2008 14:19:06

Ok Corrine. thanks for asking. i actually posted about it on the announcements page, but i will put it here too.
the care plan workshops will be on 3/10 and 3/24 at 4:00 in M411.
Senior students are invited to come and share their tips and experiences with our new 18 students. Come on either day or both and bring the careplan books that work for you.

To all the 22 students: Let's see, know all your lab values, especially RBC,WBC,platelets, K, Na, Ca, uric acid (3-8, if high, give allopurinal),Cl,Hg, Hct,BUN, creatinine, albumin
review side effects of chemo and radiation and how to prevent/minimize them.
delegation - review the questions either on the 18 book CD or the fundamentals success book. remember that an RN keeps the responsibility even if she gives out a job to someone else, don't delegate something with an unpredictable outcome or something that requires teaching, a stat dose, first dose of meds...
review the acronym caution and ways to reduce cancer risk.
all the oncological emergencies- how to recognize and treat them and teach prevention.try to remember the classic signs for each.
i don't know what else your test covers. if you have any specific questions, feel free to post them.
Don't stress, you will be fine. Get plenty of sleep before the test and of course, wear something pink. Don't forget pencils and a highlighter.
Good Luck!!!!

I took my first Nursing 20 exam this Monday and I was very confident after taking the exam. Unfortunately for me the answer key didn't agree. I failed !!! I still can't get over the fact that I could fail a test after all that reading. Anyway, I need some advice. How should I study for psych. I need to do very well on the next two exams to dig out of the deep hole my first grade put me in. PLEASE any advice is appreciated.

Tue, 18 Mar 2008 11:58:21

i think in addition to reading the book, doing practice nclex questions really helped me.

j.d.

Tue, 18 Mar 2008 12:22:17

I'm in the same class as you and I found that what really helped me is listening to the recordings and reading the notes over and over again. Study group can also be helpful but you have to know the material before joining a grp or else you will be lost. Joining a study group can be beneficial bc u can see what others have on their notes and you can hear their explanation of something (in a student's point of view), which is simpler and more understandable. I found these things very helpful for me, but of course everyone's different!

Leka

Tue, 18 Mar 2008 15:02:25

I was very nervous because this was my first time taking any nursing exams. Im in nursing 18. But i did really well and passed. What helped me was listenig during lecture and not writing, as well as recording the prof. Then i would go home listen to the recording and then write my notes. Also the prof. posted the powerpoint on blackboard which i also looked at.

tehila

Tue, 18 Mar 2008 17:52:05

every one needs to find what works for them. for me, if i'm not writing, i'm not listening. i take notes, and record and read the book and then make flashcards of the critical points from all of them. also i do as many practice questions as i can and discuss them with other students or a professor if i don't get them.
good luck!

Okay Pysch folks.......you need to regroup and refocus!
Stop whinning and START REFRAMING!!

Evaluate YOUR thought process and how YOU addressed each question.
THAT is how you approach a PSYCH test!!
It is not about memorizing facts or figures.....it's hands on interpretation of people's thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Remmeber: YOUR sucess is how YOU PERCIEVE it!!
Think a psych question through its to entirety.
Psych nursing has a ripple effect....goals are not as clearly defined nor are they as easily measurable as can be done in other areas of nursing....The continuance of care is far more involved.

Hi Kai,
I also failed the first Nur 20 test but I'm sure you didn't do as bad as me. I even shocked myself. This was the lowest grade I ever got in my life !!! A 25 which comes out to a 62.5%. I am so embarrassed and very frightened about the next test. I just pray I can answer the next set of questions " Psychologically". I hope we all will greatly improve!!!!!

WELL BREEZED THROUGH PSYCH WITHOUT A PROBLEM BUT HERE I SIT FAILING ONCOLOGY/NEURO. THE SAD THING IS I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY. I READ THE CHAPTERS, TRIED TO MAKE SENSE OF THE POWER POINTS, READ MY NOTES AND THEN DREW A BLANK ON THE LAST TWO TESTS. I ACTUALLY THINK THEY WERE TO EASY WHICH SCREWED ME UP. I ONLY HAVE A 72 AVERAGE AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO DIFFERENTLY TO ENSURE SUCCESS. THE WORST PART IS MY CLASS IS DOING GREAT. THERE ARE EVEN 5 OR 6 PEOPLE WHO AT THIS POINT ARE GETTING AN A. CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE AND HELP ME REGROUP SO I CAN GET CLOSER TO MAKING MY DREAM OF BEING A NURSE A REALITY. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

the best advice i can give to everyone studying and worried is this. do not re-read your book for the final. look over the charts and boxes. read through your notes twice front to back and back to front. jot down impt things on flashcards. listen to your lecturer while you are cooking, cleaning etc and then the day before the final stop studying and just do questions. get an nclex style cd and do as many questions on your topic as you can find. good luck!!

hey, well, i just finished with nursing 21,, and summer is just about to start, I hear the vidabeck book is very good, do u guys think it be silly to start studying and do all the questions in that book/ ? or should i just wait till they start teaching it?

tehila

Sun, 08 Jun 2008 06:47:08

my opinion is that you are better off reading only the text books, not any review books. the info in them is sometimes slightly different and only your text is a reliable source of info for your tests. i would start reading (do you know what u are having first?) and for psych i would do questions in the purple reviews and rationales book. also, get an nclex style book or cd and do questions on med surg as a good review for 22.
good luck. although i am graduating, i will still be availablr to answer questions. feel free to email me,

Have plans for graduation?

Have you considered Nursing opportunities in other states?

If anyone needs free information on pay rates for RNs and LPNs in the Allentown or Reading Pennsylvania areas write me an email at klopez@giglogo.com. These areas are about a 2 hour drive to NY.

I also have information regarding home and apartment prices in those areas for anyone interested they can visit www.giglogo.com, and click on the homes and properties tab.

Don't forget that your textbook comes with a CD and a website you can access that has great practice questions on them and your textbook also has a studyguide book that can be purchased seperately. This book tests you on the content of your textbook and even more important the BOXES in the chapters that you should be paying close attention to.

Ange

Thu, 18 Dec 2008 21:12:44

Yes. Read the book. it helps a lot. all though the lecture gives you all the required info. reading the book allows you to connect all the dots for yourself. and it brings you a lot of confidence you will need when taking the test. Don't worry it is not so hard don't get psyched out by what others might say because that is what happened to me and I failed the first exam. Just study and you will do fine.

Vernnie

Fri, 19 Dec 2008 09:47:02

Yeah for 22 make sure you read the book and listen to what ever the prof is lecturing and for psych read the book and listen record the lecture. you will be fine as long as you start reading the chapters they send you guys to read in the letter.

I am currently in Nursing 22 and I have professor Bellomo. Any suggestions on how to study for the exams? I'm terrified I really want to pass.
